Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering is one of four academic departments at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology based at its campus in Malabe. Established in 2006 as the Department of Computer Systems and Networking it is headed by Dr. Malitha Wijesundara. At its formation it was the first department of it type established in Sri Lanka. Since July 2009, it has been renamed as the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering (ECE).

The department is responsible for carrying out academic studies and research in areas of electronic engineering, computer science, computer engineering, network engineering and network & information security. Currently no post-graduate programs are offered from the department.
In November 2007, undergrad student research projects won the gold award and 3 merit awards at the Techno 2007, national engineering exhibition organized by the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL).[1] In 2008 a student research project won a merit award at the prestigious National Best Quality Software Awards organized by the British Computer Society Sri Lanka Section.[2]
The Electronic & Computer Engineering Student Community (ECESC) is the principal student body of the department of ECE. Formed in July 2007 as Computer Systems & Networking Student Community, it aims to foster and encourage knowledge sharing among students as well as to promote awareness amongst students and the community on the latest developments in the field of embedded systems, data communications and information security. In addition, the ECESC promotes and organizes the cultural and social activities of the department.
